02 - week two

WEEK TWO

When the glitter settles and everyone returns to their dorms - or wherever they intend to sleep for the night, if you’re planning on sleeping at all - your first week of school officially ends. Perhaps it was better than you expected, perhaps it was worse.

Hopefully you learned a bit more about teamwork and school spirit.

Still, this course is going to run for longer than a full week, and come Sunday morning you’re still exactly as you were when you settled down for the night. Still in Estelline, still with that mark on your wrist, still connected to your partner. There are some changes, though. The bookstore has received quite a few books, and those of you who added to the bulletin board and pep rally tasks in the first week will find an envelope taped to their dorm door (or themselves, if they spent the night elsewhere). Inside of the envelope is some kind of voucher! Furthermore, the common area is covered in a bunch of glitter.

Also, there are a ton of eggs in the kitchen – at least 10 dozens.

Florence or Lorelei are still available, should you wish to speak to them.

Finally, you've got some new locations to explore.

OOC NOTE

OOC: Anyone who performed in the Pep Rally (Sabo, Madara, Riku, Shizuku, Herlock, Idia, Flat, Miach) task will be able to redeem a voucher for a prize with one of the NPCs. This can be handwaved, and the prize selection is below.

-Single-serve coffee machine wither a selection of creamer. Comes with packs of coffee beans.
-Popcorn maker and kernels.
-High-quality tea kettle with a selection of just as high-quality tea.
-Carbonation machine (think Sodastream, etc) with flavored syrup.

Any coffee, tea, popcorn, etc. will last characters up to two weeks.

Anyone who participated in the Bulletin Board task will receive a voucher for your choice of two pairs colorful socks with cute animal designs. (Worry frog design available.)

[Laundry Room

Welp, sorry for the glitter. Waking up in the morning and finding the common room full of glitter can't have been all too great, if you're a sane or orderly person. Given how Herlock Sholmes is in the laundry room, washing his very much glittery clothes while he wears stuff from the gift shop, it may be easy to deduce whose fault that all was.

Still, he's not just sitting there, though. Sholmes is standing there, playing the violin. Do you know how Sherlock Holmes is amazing playing the violin?

Well, Sholmes is good at it too. Problem is, this is a viola. You can't play a viola like you do a violin. There he is, trying, until he sighs and just...drops his shoulders and slouches forward. Ah, goddamnit, he's moping.

Oh well, can't mope all day.

Exploring the new area goes pretty quickly. Before long, Sholmes finds the vehicles on the street. Ah, interesting! Cars already exist in his time -- hell, he even owns one -- but that doesn't stop him from trying to figure out how to try to make these run. It's going to be a fruitless endeavor, but he seems to be having a lot of fun diving into the engine of these cars!]

Did you hear about how in some of the worlds we come from, these vehicles can fly in the air, like birds? What a thought. Sometimes the future seems like it strives to be more inconvenient than the present currently is. That's humankind.

[ first flat with playing the trombone in the ""practice room"" and now this? at least the laundry room isn't as centralized as the telephone booth but nevertheless...

he will not equate that he's upset that the viola is not a violin and instead think that there is something wrong with the machines...or his clothes. you know, sometimes people are just bad at instruments. ]

[Sholmes throws his hands up with annoyance, which means he stopped playing this viola in such a mortifying manner]

I seem to have lost all musical skill upon being brought to this university! The Muse of music has abandoned me! Now all a violin can be in my hands is a piece of stringed flotsam!

[ he was going to feel for sholmes up until he got to the bit about how the violin has abandoned him and. well.

hopefully he was joking about it? maybe it's an expression of some sort? either way, he'll be as delicate as possible. you know, as a means of not coming off as a fool. ]

[ Hien is standing on one of those cars, because he's leaping from car to car. Can't hold back his parkour hobbies. He won't jump on the one Sholmes is looking at, so he jumps to the ground. ]

Yeah. Told you flying cars were a hassle.

[ Though that makes him wonder. ]

Ms. Mihie's world, for one -- although hovering vehicles are the least of her world's worries. I have heard enough about it to categorically call it a nightmare.

[He feels bad for Miach, haha]

[ He's heard of the problem in Miach's world too, and honestly... he feels bad, yet it unsettles him at the same time. ]

I see. That's just one more bad thing to the list, huh?

[ He tries to peek at what Sholmes is doing. ]

Since when is a best effort worth something when the result is as horrendous as these sounds?

[Thankfully, Sholmes stops playing, uf. Ears are spared. He doesn't seem to appreciate the polite encouragement]

When it's you're just starting out playing an instrument. If not, I might be concerned, actually.

[ He'll just helpfully point out. ]

In the end, practice makes perfect, right?

[Mae has resigned herself to having to do laundry on her own, so here she is with a basket full of her own clothes (convenient that Luci doesn't wear anything). Her ears twitch when she hears the music; it reminds her of those videos on the internet of people purposefully playing the recorder badly.

She walks in, catches sight of what's going on... she has no idea of the differences between the violin and the viola but she does know that this is pretty bad.]

...Rough night?

Rough night, she asks...

[At least he stops playing, out of consideration for the feline sensitive ears]

The night went well, thanks to that explosion of glitter and paper I triggered. I have no complaints about it. [Yeah, the "Furthermore, the common area is covered in a bunch of glitter." is Sholmes' fault, yup] But when I expected to relax with some pleasant violin music while all that glitter washed away, I found I lost all musical talent!

[He throws his arms to the air]

This week is ruined even though it just began!

Oh yeah. After I didn't play bass for awhile, I totally sucked at it.

[Is this the same situation? She's going to say it is. Also, she's taking note that the glitter is Sholmes's fault!]

Maybe you just need to practice some more? [She still doesn't realize that's a viola and no amount of practice will help.]

[The only good thing about being so close to the laundry room and his partner being a filthy door-open-club was that he could usually get an idea of who was coming and going. In the rare case he needed to catch someone, it was... an advantage.]

[Of course, it could still take upwards of fifteen minutes for Idia to work up the courage to actually butt in. Shlomes is making a weird sounding clamor and going into a gloomy slump before Idia can actually say anything.]

"Mr. Sholmes."

[... and by "say something" we mean he's poking his tablet around the doorway and letting it talk for him.]

"I need to discuss something with you."

[herlocksholmes]

[Now this he didn't see coming! Leaving behind his clothes in the washing machine and probably forgetting to come back for it until, like, the next day, Sholmes comes out of the laundry room, a tad more cheered up by virtue of having something else to deal with]

Mr. Shroud, it's so gratifying to hear that grating electronic voice. How may I be of service?

[Like a timid cat, Idia takes a few steps back as Sholmes takes steps out of the laundry room,]

[(And he does furrow his eyebrows a bit at "grating" even though it's hardly as if his own voice were being insulted. His... tablet's?? honor has been insulted?)]

"Here."

[And from behind the tablet, Idia sticks out his hand where he's loosely holding onto- the voucher he got for "participating" in the pep rally.]

[ well now that is an interesting take that ryouma just can't ignore. he also knows a thing or two about these cars but only because magic injected that knowledge into his brain once because he's a rider. ]

Inconvenient? How do you mean? Humanity's innovations just make life easier and better for people, I think!

My good fellow, surely you jest! I have been examining the technology in this university, and half of what I have found seem to have been made with the purpose of making daily life more cumbersome. Take these, for example. [He waves the ID card that allows entrance to his room] This is supposed to increase safety but it doesn't stop me from breaching into a room. How is this any safer?

[Sholmes confessing to breaking and entering, yeah. He hasn't done it since the first day but his point still stands]

Well, anyone with the right skills can manage to do things like that that are outside of what something's intended for, you know? In that case, they'd just have to plan for that next time. That's how we improve upon things!

[ Sholmes having opened up the car engine seems fascinating, so Miach tip-toes over in order to look over his shoulder as he rummages through. ]

Now you're also going on about flying cars? They hover in my world, but I'm not sure I'd call it any more or less convenient than these older models.

[herlocksholmes]

Why would one invent such a thing? It defies human understanding something so heavy can be up in the air.

[He doesn't say it's impossible but he does think it's bound to be very inconvenient -- as if Sholmes only creates very convenient inventions that totally won't cause trouble, Mr. 'pour this into tea and see if it is authentic tea but also turns it undrinkable anyway']

[Apparently his failure at playing the violin discouraged him greatly, wow]

For a moment I thought something terrible must have happened - or that a spirit was wailing in this room. Hmm, I see... it was your heart that was wailing. Indeed, a most distressful sound.

[ Kind of weird to see the detective in this state. ]

Are you - well, I suppose I should ask were you a professional musician as well as a detective?

[ And something else? A hospital technician or an aide?? ]
