WEEK SIX

Sunday starts with more aches and pains than you might be used to. Florence patched people up after Saturday’s lesson, sure, but it’s not a complete cure - not to mention it doesn’t ease the sting of betrayal. Some classmates that you thought would cooperate wound up breaking your trust in the end, and this week will be interesting with the fallout.

It’s hard to say what this week will have in store otherwise. Things are changing, and it’s not clear what this means for all of you. On the bright side, however, the creatures and places you once knew from home have suddenly disappeared, so that's less that you need to worry about. There are new areas for you to look at as well.

Mmmh-hah-huh?

[Mae wakes in a completely undignified faction, blinking stupidly at Luci for a moment before shaking her head to clear it. She'd been dreaming, probably not a nightmare (or maybe so; she's gotten good at sleeping through them), so her brain is slow to catch up to the waking world.]

Luci...? It's still dark...

[She doesn't go right back to sleep, but she certainly sounds confused.]

[ Luci settles back in next to her while she's awake, back to her and not completely curled up like a cat. Ignoring her confusion at first, he scoffs. Then he grumbles. ]

Thanks for the insight, captain obvious.

[He's been like this since they got back; more testy than normal, generally snappy. So far she's just let him be, thinking he'll work himself out, but...

She tries to wake up faster, rubbing sleep out of her eyes and sitting up in bed.]

Is something wrong? [She's just going to ignore the insult because it wasn't even a very good one.]

[totalcatastrophe]

Pfft. No.

[ But his voice has gone petulant. Only Luci can manage to come off this annoyed and defiant while snuggling back into her more. ]

It's just--Why should you get to sleep when I can't?

[ That's not the reason but he complains anyway. ]

So pain sharing isn't enough? Now I have to suffer your insomnia too?

[She can't help it, the comeback when Luci sounds like that is so easy.

But she lowers her hands, to get a better look at him.]

Why can't you sleep?

[totalcatastrophe]

[ Luci ignores that first question, rolling so his back is to her instead. He still sounds sour and flippant. ]

Dunno. Maybe because I never needed it before this place?

[ After a beat of silence, he sighs. There's an uneasiness that sneaks up on him. He ends up sounding more like he's talking to himself. ]

You know, I should be lovin' all this stuff.

[totaltrashfire]

[There is another beat of silence, as Mae tries to be certain about what "all this stuff" is. She's pretty sure he doesn't mean sleeping, so...]

You mean... the whole "course"?

[Pain and betrayal sounds like a very demon thing to like, she guesses.]

Only the cool parts of it. Danger, pain, suffering. It's like all my favorite things. Could have added more blood, though.

[ He keeps going, and he sounds more proud than ashamed when he admits-- ]

Man, I've betrayed so many people.

[totaltrashfire]

Hmm, I bet. I bet they teach you how to do it in hell.

[And yet she knows he didn't seem too jazzed about it in the last game, even if he didn't actively speak up to stop them.]

But it sounds like you aren't lovin' it this time?

[totalcatastrophe]

Oh, yeah. You can't trust anyone in Hell. We get rewarded for being jerks down there.

[ Luci explains happily enough, but it's followed by the silence that her prodding produces. He doesn't bother holding back how torn he is, but still grumbles about it. ]

This pain sharing thing is a real pain in the ass.

[totaltrashfire]

...Yeah. I guess it's weird that they tied us together like this.

[She fiddles with the sheets. She feels like she should probably apologize for how often she gets hurt, given the circumstances, but she doesn't.]

I guess that's what they want, though. To encourage bonding? Or something.

[totalcatastrophe]

[ He groans, soft but annoyed, into his own sheets crumpled in front of him from all of his earlier shifting. ]

Yeah well, I'm not great at this whole bonding thing.

[ Luci even says the word bonding like he detests it. But still, it's just the two of them. ]

... Wanna know a secret?

[She doesn't know if she believes that, but she doesn't argue with him about it. Instead, she nods, leaning forward a little, if they're being all conspiratorial.]

Yeah.

[Hit her with it.]

[totalcatastrophe]

[ Luci looks around, as if there is someone watching them. There probably is. Anyway, he shifts again to lean in like it is Really Serious. It's his darkest of secrets.

As quietly as Luci can whisper it into her ear, he sounds pained to admit-- ]

I'm actually nice.

[totaltrashfire]

...oh wait she should say something.]

Oh wow, really?

[She's trying to sound genuinely surprised but she isn't a good actress.]
