3.0 - week three

WEEK THREE

Last night might have been exhausting for any number of reasons - maybe it was the emotional

toll of dealing with those ghosts, or maybe you stayed up too late after watching Jim Shrok. Who knows, but Saturday is over, even if some of you haven’t quite left it behind and half spirits that are still hanging on, tethered to you and weighing you down…

But that’s not going to stop a new week from starting. There’s no breaks in an eight week course.

There’s very little fanfare to the start of your third week of the course, though it does seem like the fog has lifted even more. It’s a bit more of a trek down the abandoned streets of Estelline, but surely a mile is walkable? Or you could grab a bike or try to hotwire one of those cars in the mall parking lot… Whatever you plan to do this week is up to you. All you know is you've got some new locations to explore.

[Hien gets a little skeptical look from Phantom for that. The threatening aura score is completely lacking.]

I doubt our instructor would generously send something of mine that I would actually want. Or could use, at the moment.

[But he glances in curiosity until he catches sight of the mirror shard and... completely freezes up for a moment.]

[ Fai tilts his head slightly. ]

See something you recognize?

That mir-- mirror. The broken one. [...] It belongs to me.

Then it's yours to take, free of charge.

[ Because unlike Hien, he's nice and won't make people pay up for their things. ]

[Hien is nice!! Phantom hesitates a moment before leaning in to pick up the shard very carefully. No one needs to get cut by this today.]

I would ask if you should take my word for it so easily, but I very much doubt anyone wants a broken mirror. You ended up with quite a strange assortment.

I did, didn't I?

[ He laughs softly. ]

But I'm glad that you could find something of yours in this strange assortment too. Do you mind if I ask about the origin of that shard?

[Phantom pauses for a moment, maybe just to consider the phrasing.]

It's a piece of a protective mirrage. You can think of it as... a magic artefact that can limit a mage's power. As the name implies, it's used as a protective measure to reduce strain on the body.

[partymagician]

[ Oh!!

Fai scoots forward on the couch to get a better look at it. ]

So, it reduces the impact a spell will have on you?

[selfconcept]

Nerd.

[ Don't mind him... ]

[partymagician]

[ Fai just ignored Hien when he said it during his conversation with Owen, but now Hien is getting a pinch in the side. ]

[ ow???

Hmph... he'll go back to being a language nerd on his own now, after getting the look of "you wouldn't get it" from Phantom. ]

[LET THE NERDS LIVE, HIEN!! Phantom gives him the universal "you wouldn't get it" look reserved for jocks before he holds out the shard for Fai's inspection.]

It's not impossible, although an anti-mirrage bracelet would serve that purpose better. This isn't a shield. Rather, you could use it to reduce the power of the mage before they cast, to achieve a similar effect.

[ Fai takes the shard, looking at it closely. ]

I see... so if I were to cast a spell on you, would you flash this at me beforehand?

[As expected from someone who both likes and dislikes magic. This looks more like the former to Phantom.]

Essentially, yes. Since it's shattered, it won't seal things passively. But it would enhance a spell to that effect if channeled through it.

[partymagician]

[ Fai hands it back. ]

So it weakens the other person's magic while enhancing your own? What a valuable item...

[Phantom gingerly takes that shard back. This is going to be a pain to store.]

All mirrages enhance magic, to an extent.

[He reaches up to adjust his monocle and pauses, remembering he hasn't been wearing it.]

But, yes. It's quite specialized. Though useless in practice here.

[partymagician]

It sure is.

[ It's too bad Fai doesn't have anything to wrap it with, otherwise he'd offer that to Phantom too. ]

If we get our powers back before we're kicked out, I'd like to see you use it.

[exofractured]

Once we get our powers back, one way or another, I can guarantee everyone will see mine.

[He wasn't mad before the ghost thing, but now. Oops.]

I hope I have a chance to see your magic, too. It seems such a waste to meet people from so many worlds and not be able to compare.

You just might get a chance!

[ But the way Fai says it feels more like he's saying "no promises". He's better off not using his magic, he thinks. ]

[Hmmm, hedging. Oh well.]

In any case, thank you for returning this. If I see anything of yours... [Oh, hm.] Unless either of you happen to be looking for a plush dog or a laptop.

Nope! I have my very cute puppy right here!

[ He pats Hien's knee. ]

[ He smacks Fai's face with his hand despite the pain sharing. ]

Stop that.

[ Fai just pinches Hien's cheeks. ]

Awww, isn't he a naughty little puppy, Phantom?

[ Sorry that Fai is dragging him into this... ]

[Post-Saturday Phantom will remember this and long for the escape of death. Current Phantom is watching with something like amused fascination.]

I think you should take more care he doesn't bite you.

[ Too late. Hien whips his head around in an attempt to free his face from pinching and to bite Fai's hand. ]
