05 - week five

WEEK FIVE

Come Sunday morning, the portals around Estelline fade away, but not all of the oddities hanging around disappear so quickly. The recreations of your dreams and memories are still around, ever changing and shifting. Whatever it is that brought these things here hasn’t ended, not yet.

You don’t have time to worry about all of that, though, even if you know you should exercise caution once two of you found yourselves on the bad end of a monster’s claws. The course still isn’t over, though, even if the portals changed lesson plans. Everything continues on, with new places to explore as the fog pushes back once again. This week still feels a little more like what you’re familiar with, though, after Saturday’s lack of lessons.

Simple. You're the first person we've seen from your institute. In future experiments, you could likely avoid this by maintaining a presence from the beginning.

Now, about this connection between emotions and your environment. Considering the emotional range a number of the students here have been through, it would seem that effect only applies to natives of your world?

That... that seems to be the case, y-yes... If you haven't noticed it happening yourselves than it must not be s-something you're capable of...

Hm. While I can see why that would make for a safer experiment, don't you think that limits what you could learn? You can hardly hope to apply the findings from this to your own people when you don't know what the repercussions would be on those with that ability.

There's kind of... limited subjects, though...? I mean, with the way everyone's just been disappearing there's not exactly a lot of volunteers to spare...

Maybe one or two others? It's very quiet now and anyone else is too afraid to leave...

Yes, if it's that bad, why don't you just run away? Surely the technology or magic you used to bring all of us here could be applied in reverse. I would think giving up on this world entirely would be easier.

This is my home? P-plus even if we find somewhere to take ourselves, i-it's not like we can abandon everyone here... That would just... that would just be incredibly cruel! Not to mention finding a place that could house all of these people without destroying the economy or environment of the world, not to mention how dangerous some of the places people come from are! Th-those monsters that some people deal with...! That's so risky!!

I see a number of risks to this approach as well. And surely if your experiment can find a way to disable people's magic, you would have no problem dealing with monsters of any scale. So what is it they hope to achieve with this? Curbing emotional reactions through these connections?

I'm n-not sure how your magic is being disabled, though? S-so I'm not sure that could be accomplished on such a large scale, not to mention the protests from the inhabitants of that world could lead to war...

I-I... maybe? This is above my paygrade so I d-don't know what, precisely, they wanted to happen... I'm just here to see how everything's going!

True. You're seeing that on a smaller scale right now. And furthermore, if you managed to disable only the inhabitants and not the monsters, that could create a situation of a different kind.

How interesting, though. I would think there were easier ways to monitor us than sending someone in person.

Y-yes, so as you can see, it is not necessarily a more… more feasible approach.
