3.0 - week three

WEEK THREE

Last night might have been exhausting for any number of reasons - maybe it was the emotional

toll of dealing with those ghosts, or maybe you stayed up too late after watching Jim Shrok. Who knows, but Saturday is over, even if some of you haven’t quite left it behind and half spirits that are still hanging on, tethered to you and weighing you down…

But that’s not going to stop a new week from starting. There’s no breaks in an eight week course.

There’s very little fanfare to the start of your third week of the course, though it does seem like the fog has lifted even more. It’s a bit more of a trek down the abandoned streets of Estelline, but surely a mile is walkable? Or you could grab a bike or try to hotwire one of those cars in the mall parking lot… Whatever you plan to do this week is up to you. All you know is you've got some new locations to explore.

From where I'm standing, the similarities are unfortunately more clear. You both enjoy provoking reactions from people.

Does he really?

He never tries to get reactions out of me.

[ He’s kind of jealous?? ]

He doesn't?

[Why does Fai look less pleased about that??]

Perhaps you should try responding more like Marcus does.

Ah… I could never respond that way! Besides, Hien always runs away after he tries teasing me anyway.

[He begins to understand. RIP Hien.]

I see. You're a formidable opponent, as I suspected.

Of course I am! Hien and I got put together for a reason, after all. He needed someone who could stand up to his mean ways.

You're giving their systems entirely too much credit.

[partymagician]

[ That makes him laugh. ]

Right. There isn't much fondness between you and your partner, am I correct?

...We know each other much too well.

[What a good time to change the subject! Look at this nifty murder skeleton.]

So your world didn't have creatures like these either, I take it?

[ He eyes the displays, taking the hint that Phantom doesn't want to talk about his partner. ]

No. Where I grew up, we mostly had fish and bears. Not big creatures like this.

[ ... ]

I don't think lizards could have survived the cold.

I would think bears are more than large enough.

[Though still slightly(??) smaller than this fear lizard. But Phantom brightens a little at that point.]

True, though. A single ice spell would likely stop even something like this in its tracks.

[ He laughs softly. ]

Definitely! A nice wave of ice could knock just about anything over.

Not an option here, of course. With any luck, we won't encounter one of these still alive.

I hope not. It would be awful if they came alive at night, wouldn't it?

[ It's not entirely far-fetched since they've already dealt with ghosts... ]

I have no intention of being here at night to find out. [Wait, horrible thought.] ...That had better not be our next lesson.

[partymagician]

...I hope not. I'd like to avoid coming back here for another lesson.

[ He didn't get possessed, but it sure sucked anyway!!! ]

I'll admit, though, that I'm worried about the future after that last lesson.

[It sucked!! A lot!!]

As am I. I doubt they intend to make them less dangerous from here.

[Although that's... also reminding him.]

I likely owe you an apology for what Marcus did. Is Hien healed yet?

[partymagician]

No, but he's wearing that sweater that helps with pain right now.

[ Fai lets out a small sigh. ]

I'll try to reel him in from now on so he doesn't get in so many fights.

I suppose he's taking care in his own way.

[Phantom has his own sweater on, and is... just now starting to wonder if he should be more concerned at how low a price their instructor set them at. How many did she expect them to need?]

It would be optimistic to hope the situation doesn't arise again. Unfortunately, I can't make any promises where Marcus is concerned. I'll do what I can.

That's all you can do. I can't even guarantee that Hien will calm down on his own either, even if I scold him.

[ He might have to do it a few more times before it finally sticks for Hien... ]

Whatever happens, I won't fault you for it.

And we can guarantee even less, at the whims of whatever exercise they put us to next.

[For once he wasn't trying to drag Marcus completely? Maybe. It is a mystery.]

You can reserve judgment for then. Blame me if it's appropriate.

Alright, I will. I'll blame you so hard you won't know what's coming!

[ He laughs. ]

Come find Hien or I if you need help during the next lesson. We truly won't know what's in store until it happens.

[MENACING...]

...I'll keep that in mind. Without magic I don't have much to offer in return. But if I can be of use, the same goes for the two of you.

Oh, I'm sure you have plenty to offer! Can you carry heavy things?

[ But Fai will take him up on that offer... maybe. He doesn't like getting people involved in dangerous things, even if he volunteers himself to do the same. ]
