3.0 - week three

WEEK THREE

Last night might have been exhausting for any number of reasons - maybe it was the emotional

toll of dealing with those ghosts, or maybe you stayed up too late after watching Jim Shrok. Who knows, but Saturday is over, even if some of you haven’t quite left it behind and half spirits that are still hanging on, tethered to you and weighing you down…

But that’s not going to stop a new week from starting. There’s no breaks in an eight week course.

There’s very little fanfare to the start of your third week of the course, though it does seem like the fog has lifted even more. It’s a bit more of a trek down the abandoned streets of Estelline, but surely a mile is walkable? Or you could grab a bike or try to hotwire one of those cars in the mall parking lot… Whatever you plan to do this week is up to you. All you know is you've got some new locations to explore.

That might stun it, but I'm not sure if it would be enough for a kill... Whales live in the depths of the sea, their skin is quite thick to isolate them from the cold.

[tosa]

(Oh.)

Maybe a buncha guns then? Ah, but y'know... that's a bad way to go down.

Are guns really your only idea for a weapon? People have been catching big fish since way before the invention of guns, you know.

[ Miach has never been fishing in her life, but having read about it counts to make her an expert, right? ]

Well... back in my day, it was mostly a bunch of nets and spears.

(He's a ye olde.)

It was pretty dangerous work.

You'll be pleased to know that in the future, they will devise a tool that combine the advantages of a hooked spear - a harpoon - with those of a gun. Harpoon guns make for much more effective tools than harpoons or guns can be individually. The force of a gun combined with the sharp tip of the spear are quite the force to be reckoned with.

Of course, that effectiveness in whale hunting will drive some species to near extinction.

Amazing! So they made something stronger and better to catch better things! The future's pretty impressive--

They kill that many?

Indeed! The easier animal products like meat are to obtain, the more wide-spread their consumption becomes. Demand for formerly rare items is high as the quality of life keeps seemingly improving overall - and in a bid to turn a profit from that mindset of general availability, companies killed far more whales than there are new whales being born. The population was gravely reduced.

And that is not even counting the amount of marine species that got caught unintentionally during this era of industrial fishing - merely byproduct, to be discarded as undesirable and yet dead all the same.

That is the destructive power of the system called 'capitalism' that ruled until the early 21st century.
