3.0 - week three

WEEK THREE

Last night might have been exhausting for any number of reasons - maybe it was the emotional

toll of dealing with those ghosts, or maybe you stayed up too late after watching Jim Shrok. Who knows, but Saturday is over, even if some of you haven’t quite left it behind and half spirits that are still hanging on, tethered to you and weighing you down…

But that’s not going to stop a new week from starting. There’s no breaks in an eight week course.

There’s very little fanfare to the start of your third week of the course, though it does seem like the fog has lifted even more. It’s a bit more of a trek down the abandoned streets of Estelline, but surely a mile is walkable? Or you could grab a bike or try to hotwire one of those cars in the mall parking lot… Whatever you plan to do this week is up to you. All you know is you've got some new locations to explore.

I am! I got lots of rest yesterday.

[ He desperately needed it. ]

How are you doing this morning?

Awfully - though I have been worse.

[ She's smiling faintly as she says it though. ]

Sleeping off the all nighter we pulled on Saturday is one thing, but all that we learned is another entirely. You're not bothered?

Hmm... I am bothered, honestly.

[ Fai picks up his cup of coffee and has a sip. ]

It won't do anyone any good if I let it show, not when I'm one of the older ones in our group.

[imitationsoul]

Right, you were a century old, weren't you? Whatever you do to stay young works impressively well.

[ Her world has halted aging pretty well too but to look this fresh at 100? No way, not even there. ]

But most of the people here are adults, so what's an age difference of some fifty years? They can take care of themselves.

[ But also— ]

There are still plenty of younger ones here, though. I know a few of them aren't used to things like this.

[imitationsoul]

And you honestly think you can make it easier for them?

[ From her expression, it is fairly obvious that she believes this is a fool's errand. She does still genuinely want to hear the answer though. ]

[partymagician]

[ Her expression is what compels him to be fully honest. ]

No. Whether or not things are easier for them comes partially from themselves. I can’t do anything about that.

[ A pause. ]

However… there’s no harm in trying to make things easier. It’s easy enough for me to do, so I might as well.

You're the compassionate type, indeed.

[ Good to know he's not completely deluded about this options. She's feeling herself lose her appetite for breakfast though. ]

You might not be doing them a favor. Eventually, there might be a time where they will have to learn to face these things alone without leaning on anybody. I hope there will be.

You hope for that? Is that for your own personal growth?

[ He shoots her a curious look. ]

Oh? Do you think me a sheltered child also?

[ She would not blame him if he did - it's not like she advertises her various experiences that strongly. But she is curious. ]

[partymagician]

[ He thinks back to her profile, remembering "test subject" listed as her occupation. Knowing the sort of things that could entail... ]

No.

[ Does he still consider her a child? Not completely, but he does think of her as incredibly young. ]

I wouldn't classify anyone with an occupation like yours as sheltered.

Mhm.

I don't appreciate a lot about this place, but the honesty in calling it that instead of a euphemistic 'patient' is nice.

[ The world is a giant hospital etc etc etc, but she does enjoy not having her position be trivialized. ]

So no, not for my personal growth. For theirs.

[ "Patient" would be... upsetting. He'd also prefer the real title. ]

Theirs? Are you interested in seeing how everyone else reacts to these tasks?

A little bit.

[ She hesitates. ]

Though that makes me sound an awful lot like Lorelei. How unpleasant...

[ That makes him laugh. ]

Hmm, I suppose it does. Tell me why you're interested in seeing how they react.

[imitationsoul]

[ Demanding... Wait, she started this talk for a reason, didn't she? ]

Only if you make me breakfast.

[partymagician]

[ That makes him smile. ]

Sure. Are you in the mood for an omelet or scrambled eggs? I could make a waffle too, if you want that instead.

[imitationsoul]

Omelet sounds good.

[ After spending a few weeks in this place, she's gotten used to the tastes of the present. It has made her the exact opposite of a picky eater - every taste is exciting and the more she learns to tolerate them, the more she enjoys eating. ]

[partymagician]

Omelet it is!

[ Fai starts to get everything ready, turning on the stove to heat up the pan. ]

So... why do you want to see how they react?

[imitationsoul]

[ Well, with breakfast secured, there is no more reason to refuse conversation. ]

They're from such different places, but all a measure of sheltered. I am of the belief that a measure of confrontation with risk and danger is necessary for the human self-preservation instinct as well as general mental health. So their adaptability is of interest to me in a way that is quite removed from Lorelei's objective.

[partymagician]

[ He's quiet for a few moments as he works on cooking the egg. ]

...I do think you have a point. However, I wouldn't want them to go through something particularly traumatic.

[ ... ]

Although, that ship might have already sailed with this past weekend.
