01 - week one

WEEK ONE

You survived orientation. You’ve met the person you’re going to be partnered with for the duration of this course, and at least part of the campus is open to explore. The kitchen and convenience store are restocked just as promised, though depending on what you ate on Sunday night, they might look a little more...scarce than when you first arrived.

You have the rest of the week to get to know your partner and your other classmates, mentally prepare for the mission on Saturday, and keep yourself busy with tasks for the week if you so choose. You can also choose to speak to Florence or Lorelei.

[ Hien pulls up a chair and looks down at the chessboard. His eyes might as well reflect the board's pattern from how the checkerboard-patterned eyes look. ]

Sure. I suck at this game, but don't go easy on me.

[ He says that even though Mutsu just said he just figured out how to play. His voice sounds distorted with a lot of static too, so maybe a demon came to overthrow the government with you, Mutsu. ]

(He does a bit of a double take at Hien but he recovers quickly, putting on a big ol' smile for him,)

Yeah? I'll help ya out then. (Even though they're on different sides,) The best way to get better is to practice.

... Or find something different!

You're already tired of wanting to overthrow the government?

[ Bro. ]

I'm never tired.

(He is boundless puppy energy until he crashes and falls asleep in a nice patch of sun or something.)

Just sayin' if this game doesn't work out, we can try something else after. I found a pretty interesting one that teaches ya how to make a merchant fleet.

... Battleship?

[ Is that what it is? Hien knows how to play that too, so he wouldn't be bothered if Mutsu wants to change games. He starts setting up the pieces. ]

Anything can be a battleship if ya give it guns.

(This is an absolute revelation, he says it so absolutely, and yet... this does not confirm what the name of the game is.

He'll help set up the pieces too. Okay but look. All of the pieces are laid out now except for one critical piece. Mutsu takes out....... a stack of monopoly money and sets it next to the board.)

Hien eyes the monopoly money. Huh. ]

You can't overthrow the government by bribing them, you know.

Maybe not the big guy on top but there's always a few guys below him that're in to make a little bit of cash.

(He gives Hien like, 500 monopoly bucks or something. This is the part where I admit I have never played monopoly in my life.)

But more important, ya can't do anything without money. Money makes the world go 'round.

It sure does. Makes me glad we have the arrangements given to us.

[ He puts down the money in front of himself on the table. ]

But riots don't care about the money. People are just that mad. Rich nobles can't do shit against an angry mob of people who they won't satisfy due to their pride.

[tosa]

Hmm...

(He rolls a dice! It's like, a 3 or something so he moves a pawn 3 spaces. Is that not how you play chess? It is now.)

I think you're underestimating the people. Most people just wanna be happy so there's gotta be some reason to get mad.

Money, food, respect, feeling like they ain't being listened too... If ya got those things, you aren't gonna wanna fight. The problem's eventually, there's someone on top that doesn't wanna look or listen.

[ Hien lightly shrugs and follows Mutsu in rolling the dice. It lands on a five, so he sends out five pawns forward one space each. ]

Yeah? Most people don't think about happiness when they're so buried deep in their problems. They just want an immediate solution to their problems. They don't have the luxury to worry about anything else.

[tosa]

I dunno.

(He shrugs and rolls another set of dice which some how means moving 2 pawns and taking some monopoly money for himself.)

Once ya get enough problems... you start thinking about how miserable ya are. Ya feel pretty bad. But if ya felt like nothing could change that, then you probably wouldn't fight. It's how things stay the same for forever.

BUt then ya got people who think, "Things could be better" and they start coming up with ways and things to do.

How much experience you got with people? It said you're a contract worker, but that doesn't necessarily dictate experience with people. Neither does age.

[ He'd know from what he's seen. Hien rolls the dice and sics one of his pawns at Mutsu's. He doesn't know how to collect, so he takes $100. ]

Ah.... ("Contract worker.") Depends on what ya mean by experience.

(A couple of centuries if he means just watching and listening to people. Being invisible and not being able to interact with things isn't raelly experiencing them in a normal way, though.)

I've been working with a bunch of guys recently...

[ He'll listen to Mutsu's story while he thinks about what to do with this board, because he really doesn't know. Just shove all his pieces to Mutsu's side to eat them up?

(He rolls a die! He gets a nice 5 and moves one pawn... 5 spaces and takes one of his pawns, )

Hmmm... ya saw the profiles so I guess there's no point really hiding. (Kind of a relief considering he's a bad liar! But it still feels weird having to explain this,) But 's real obvious I ain't human.

Most of those years, people couldn't see or hear me but I could see and hear them.

So you were a ghost?

[ A ghost soldier? Something like that. Hien rolls the dice and gets 3, so he moves a pawn to nab another one of Mutsu's. ]

(He throws down a blue uno card. For some reason, that means being able to take 4 battleship pieces from some random pile nearby and putting them on the board in a different square. It must have something to do with the number 4 on the card.)

Spirit's better. Ghosts are mostly dead guys.

You saying you weren't alive at some point?

[ He's alive now. Sorta. Being downgraded to human. Gotta eat now.

He eyes that uno card and the four pieces of battleships. What is even happening. ]

Was this not a land war?

[ Where did the water come from!! ]

Not alive but never died, either. I'm alive right now, see?

(SPEAKING IN RIDDLES.......)

Huh? Felt like moving somewhere more advantageous.

So you parked some ships in the middle of land?

[ ??? Which parts are water?! He will never know. ]

Well, whatever. Nothing wrong with just existing.

[ He rolls the dice, and tries to get a knight piece closer to the boats. ]

My soldiers have sniping guns. +1 range.

[ He totally made that shit up. ]

Don't be silly. Ya can't put ships on land.

(It's water, obviously.)

Woah! Ya got guns, too? A real modern general, ain't ya! (Sliding a die over,) Give it a shot then.

Alright.

[ He takes the die and rolls. He rolls a four. Four for death, maybe. ]

Hm. Maybe I should take out one of your ships.

[tosa]

Wah... piracy.

(He's stunned!)

I like it.

Did you have any valuables on that ship? If you did, I'm taking it.

[ Fork over the monopoly money!! ]
