00 - prologue

PROLOGUE

It doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing – something strange begins to happen. There's a sudden burning sensation that wraps around your right wrist and part of your forearm. If you glance at the affected area, you'll find that it's...glowing.  The glow is pale blue, and it's so bright that it hurts to look at. The burn itself isn't so painful that you feel like keeling over just yet, but it does hurt nevertheless.

But before you have time to try to soothe the pain, you start to feel lightheaded, dizzy. Perhaps some of you may attribute this to any injuries you may currently be sustaining. For those who were previously unscathed, however, there's quite possibly no explanation for this other than the sudden appearance of the mysterious burn on your arm.

There is no time to mull it over, though, because it is the last thing that you see before the world suddenly fades to black.

-----

When you regain your senses, your vision is blurry; but when it starts to even out and you survey your surroundings, you find yourself sitting in a rather uncomfortable chair. Looking around you’ll see rows and rows of chairs, all facing the same way towards a desk, a podium, and an empty wall. A projector hangs from the ceiling and the lighting is bright and artificial... For some of you, it might be reminiscent of a college lecture hall. For others, you might have never seen anything like this before.

Your wrist, by the way, feels perfectly fine...though there’s now some kind of strange marking on it. It looks like a scar of some sort, and if you choose to touch it, it doesn’t feel inflamed or damaged in any way...but that doesn’t mean you don’t experience any pain. Perhaps the last thing some of you remember is a hard-fought battle, and the aches from your injuries still linger; some of you might not even remember getting hurt, and yet, your body aches like it has; for the lucky ones who feel fine, well. Pray that it lasts for a little while longer.

Because the moment someone gets hurt – emotionally or physically – there’s a small chance you’ll feel it, too. Where and who and what it’s coming from, though, is on you to figure out.

In front of you on the desk is some kind of device – a tablet, for those of you who are familiar. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be capable of doing much of anything right now, other than take photos and videos with the Camera app. There's also a translating app for those of you who need help reading some of the text around campus, as it is all in English. (Verbally, however, you can understand everyone in your own language. Tablets are also in characters' native languages.) It seems to be incredibly durable and hard to break, but you may want to be careful with it regardless.

Something shifts in your pocket (or...in your socks/shoe/what have you, if pockets aren't a thing) as you move around. Should you reach in and feel for it, you’ll find some kind of card – those who are familiar with modern technology will recognize that this is some kind of card you need to swipe. It has your name and a photo of you on one side, and the back of the card has the word "KEYCARD" on it.

There are also other people here, scattered throughout this mysterious classroom you’re in. In fact, there’re a bunch of you — 29 others, to be exact.

And now... you’re free to do whatever you want. Mostly anything, at least, given that once you step outside and explore, you’ll notice an ominous fog behind the various buildings within view. Still, this is a good time to get your bearings, check on what you have - and don’t have - and talk to the people around you until orientation starts.

( OOC: Welcome to your Intro Log! The partner system is in effect for the Intro Log, meaning that yes, pain share is happening! For some notes regarding the partner system, your character will not know who their partner is upon arrival. It’s entirely possible that they find out now if their partner gets or is already injured, or if they can pick up on their mood. Otherwise, they’ll find out later today...!

Anyone who tries to leave campus grounds will have to enter through the fog, but no matter what, they will mysteriously wind up back onto campus grounds. And for clarification, the keycards are what characters need to gain access to their dorms!

Finally, we will have an NPC Reveal at 6pm EST today! )

[ with absolutely no hesitation, flat will take that tablet. and also answer: ]

We are in an isekai! Or something like it.
unsinksyourship: (mumu (must not can't not))

[personal profile] unsinksyourship 2022-05-22 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Isekaiii?

[... He draws out the word like he's hearing it for the first time, enunciating the syllables like it's not something in his native language -- as far as their universal translator is concerned, it probably isn't. He looks Flat up and down, seeming to calm down by sheer virtue of his semi-unusual appearance. The bar is high here.

He doesn't know what a blond moment is, but maybe this is it?! Maybe he can relate to it. Who knows.]

You sound like you're talking in your sleep, young man. [yes, he sure did just call him that] Eh, not that I can talk. Can't say I've ever seen such a weird theater full of so many gadgets and weird people.

[Possibly, they are both sleeptalking. Sleepwalking. Sleeptableting. He pays the tablet yoinking absolutely zero-to-negative mind.]
escardos: (quinze.)

[personal profile] escardos 2022-05-22 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeeh? I sometimes talk in my sleep, but I don't think that this is one of those times.

[ he taps his chin, genuinely confused. ]

Weird gadgets? I don't think there's anything that weird. Have you never seen a tablet before? [ because, sir, he's holding yours. ]
unsinksyourship: (I also give up on glasses compliance)

[personal profile] unsinksyourship 2022-05-22 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[He watches the strange boy try to talk his way out of it with an air of judgment. He stares judgingly. If he had glasses, which he doesn't, he would pull them down to stare over them like a particularly miserly professor.

Anyway.]

You can't pull the wool over my eyes, of course I know what a tablet is. They haven't used those for writing in a while, though. [like, several thousand years but that's not the most important part] More importantly! That looks like something you'd see in a movie theater. Ergo, we're in a particularly advanced, particularly uncomfortable theater. Obviously.

[He's pointing at the projector like he knows what it is.]

[personal profile] escardos 2022-05-22 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ flat stares at the projector. then back at this stranger. ]

Have you never been to university...?
unsinksyourship: (I'm comparing our CR to calspi)

[personal profile] unsinksyourship 2022-05-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been in university!!

[Instant answer. Practiced answer. Does he pass the smell test--]

If you were to tell me this was a Japanese university, I'd have to call you a conman. But if you were from overseas, I'd allow that this could be the way foreign universities work.

[...]

They need better chairs.

[You're the one who went and fell out of one, Tamamori, don't blame the chair.]
escardos: (quinze.)

[personal profile] escardos 2022-05-22 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm from Monaco! But I study in London. This is exactly how the lecture halls are... except we aren't transported by weird otherworldly forces.

[ he nods. ]

What did you study?
unsinksyourship: (DEF: princess & pagemaster)

[personal profile] unsinksyourship 2022-05-23 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
So... you're not American, and you're not European, and you're in a university you recognize, but you think mysterious otherworldly forces are involved. That's a strange story, but it would probably make a good serial publication.

[..............................................................]

That's what I study, obviously. Publications, literature...

[He stops short of asking the boy if he's been reading novels instead of studying. He really doesn't have the standing to do that, even after all this time.]
escardos: (quinze.)

[personal profile] escardos 2022-05-24 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Of course I'm European. I just said I'm from Monaco. You know, the place with the casinos? Next to France?

[ hello??? ]

Could it be that they didn't teach you Geography in school?
unsinksyourship: (frog off)

[personal profile] unsinksyourship 2022-05-24 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
O-Of course I've heard of France.

[what the fuck is a Monaco]

Japan is still developing a taste for the outside world, we're taking it slow! It's not like everyone can absorb everything on the map all at once. [a belated blink] Your country's a gambling center?
escardos: (quinze.)

[personal profile] escardos 2022-05-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Something like that! Lots of tourists come in to gamble, but technically us Monegasque aren't allowed in. Isn't it weird?

[ he smiles. the technicality is that he goes in anyways, even from before he was even of age (in non-mage society). though there's something about what this guy said that confuses him. ]

I've heard from friends that the big cities in Japan are really cosmopolitan, though. Tokyo is a metropolis, too. Where are you from in Japan?

unsinksyourship: (omeless rice... real)

[personal profile] unsinksyourship 2022-05-26 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
M-Monagos-- Manoges-- Why isn't it something easier?? Are you trying to compete with France?!

[That's apparently his complaint with the current state of Monaco, along with the fact that he's still half-dubious it even exists. What the hell is that. Squinting suspiciously at Flat but apparently it's over the state of his language and not the state of his morals... wallet...... something. The important things.]

I'm from Tokyo! We've heard of all the big places, Britain, France, the Americas, Turkey, and of course Asia! We've got all the movies and everything.
escardos: (pic#13478919)

[personal profile] escardos 2022-05-28 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would we have to compete with France...?

[ he mumbles this, clearly confused by the other's confusion. but then the man says that he is from tokyo, and flat's curiosity is piqued once more. perhaps, it never went away. ]

What's it like? I've never gone there myself, but I've researched it on the Internet and talked to my friends, too.
unsinksyourship: (stroke or genius)

[personal profile] unsinksyourship 2022-05-28 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Because French is one of the harder languages and only showoffs know it-- Ahem. Anyway!

[He does not mumble this, Tamamori in fact manages it in some kind of mutter-shout with the full force of his discontent -- it is perhaps not the Modagascans that have some incomprehensible feud with the francophones in their lives.

At the least he brightens when consulted about Tokyo, because he's easy, and only a little bit moody. There's a cheerful counting off of fingers as he starts enumerating all his Tokyo times.]

I don't know what sort of outlandish research you're doing, but it's nothing like being on the ground! The streetcar goes much further now than it did before (so I'm told), and the bathhouses are to die for, both in spirit and for the eyes! There's a whole section of town just for books, and you can buy just about anything your heart desires if you can find the right seller. The Imperial University's no slouch, either -- I'll bet you've heard of it even all the way in Europe.
escardos: (quatorze.)

[personal profile] escardos 2022-05-29 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[ …

listen, everything this guy is saying makes sense on a technical level, and it’s all really cool, but… ]

You mean… University of Tokyo? I think they only called themselves that, like, a hundred years ago or something.
unsinksyourship: (omeless rice... real)

[personal profile] unsinksyourship 2022-05-30 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be ridiculous. I can understand that you're from a faraway country, but there's no need to talk like a time traveler.

[THERE ARE NO TIME TRAVELERS HERE no sirree]

We've gotten used to calling it the Imperial University in the city, but I suppose it's also the Tokyo Imperial University if you get down to it. Its history goes back to just the Meiji era, but I think it represents its time well... now and the future too, of course.
