00 - prologue
PROLOGUE

It doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing – something strange begins to happen. There's a sudden burning sensation that wraps around your right wrist and part of your forearm. If you glance at the affected area, you'll find that it's...glowing. The glow is pale blue, and it's so bright that it hurts to look at. The burn itself isn't so painful that you feel like keeling over just yet, but it does hurt nevertheless.
But before you have time to try to soothe the pain, you start to feel lightheaded, dizzy. Perhaps some of you may attribute this to any injuries you may currently be sustaining. For those who were previously unscathed, however, there's quite possibly no explanation for this other than the sudden appearance of the mysterious burn on your arm.
There is no time to mull it over, though, because it is the last thing that you see before the world suddenly fades to black.
When you regain your senses, your vision is blurry; but when it starts to even out and you survey your surroundings, you find yourself sitting in a rather uncomfortable chair. Looking around you’ll see rows and rows of chairs, all facing the same way towards a desk, a podium, and an empty wall. A projector hangs from the ceiling and the lighting is bright and artificial... For some of you, it might be reminiscent of a college lecture hall. For others, you might have never seen anything like this before.
Your wrist, by the way, feels perfectly fine...though there’s now some kind of strange marking on it. It looks like a scar of some sort, and if you choose to touch it, it doesn’t feel inflamed or damaged in any way...but that doesn’t mean you don’t experience any pain. Perhaps the last thing some of you remember is a hard-fought battle, and the aches from your injuries still linger; some of you might not even remember getting hurt, and yet, your body aches like it has; for the lucky ones who feel fine, well. Pray that it lasts for a little while longer.
Because the moment someone gets hurt – emotionally or physically – there’s a small chance you’ll feel it, too. Where and who and what it’s coming from, though, is on you to figure out.
In front of you on the desk is some kind of device – a tablet, for those of you who are familiar. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be capable of doing much of anything right now, other than take photos and videos with the Camera app. There's also a translating app for those of you who need help reading some of the text around campus, as it is all in English. (Verbally, however, you can understand everyone in your own language. Tablets are also in characters' native languages.) It seems to be incredibly durable and hard to break, but you may want to be careful with it regardless.
Something shifts in your pocket (or...in your socks/shoe/what have you, if pockets aren't a thing) as you move around. Should you reach in and feel for it, you’ll find some kind of card – those who are familiar with modern technology will recognize that this is some kind of card you need to swipe. It has your name and a photo of you on one side, and the back of the card has the word "KEYCARD" on it.
There are also other people here, scattered throughout this mysterious classroom you’re in. In fact, there’re a bunch of you — 29 others, to be exact.
And now... you’re free to do whatever you want. Mostly anything, at least, given that once you step outside and explore, you’ll notice an ominous fog behind the various buildings within view. Still, this is a good time to get your bearings, check on what you have - and don’t have - and talk to the people around you until orientation starts.
( OOC: Welcome to your Intro Log! The partner system is in effect for the Intro Log, meaning that yes, pain share is happening! For some notes regarding the partner system, your character will not know who their partner is upon arrival. It’s entirely possible that they find out now if their partner gets or is already injured, or if they can pick up on their mood. Otherwise, they’ll find out later today...!
Anyone who tries to leave campus grounds will have to enter through the fog, but no matter what, they will mysteriously wind up back onto campus grounds. And for clarification, the keycards are what characters need to gain access to their dorms!
Finally, we will have an NPC Reveal at 6pm EST today! )

Nope, the situation just can't be that normal, can it?]
...Can I... help you?
[What could be so interesting about someone else's closet, anyway? Especially before there's even been a chance for it to accumulate any skeletons??]
no subject
[He waves Cater to come over and help, either not getting what Cater's question meant, or flat out not caring about the intent of that question. Still, it's clear Sholmes has something in mind and is trying to figure things out. Whether it's something worth pursuing, though, is a different matter]
no subject
Sure. He hops up and peers inside with him.]
What are we looking for, anyway?
no subject
[Everything that's going on is like a juicy steak and he's eager to sink his teeth into it! A mass kidnapping into a well maintained place like this one, with people and animals, for some reason? It's definitely the kind of thing that catches the attention of someone who always craves interesting stuff to keep his braincells going! He wants to figure out what's going on and see if he needs to take some sort of course of action.
It's almost admirable how into everything Sholmes is right now, passing a hand on the back of the wardrobe, humming to himself, and looking like he's having the time of his life!
Well, he looks like that almost always. He's a cheerful man...to a fault, the annoying asshat]
I would be amiss if I didn't check every nook and cranny of these buildings. I'm certain the owners of this room won't mind!
[As if one of the owners isn't standing right there with him, hah]
no subject
[Isn't that, like, way too stereotypical? This guy is dressed in some kind of detective costume, and is snooping around wherever he can reach, talking about mysteries?
...Is he some kind of chuuni or just really dedicated to the bit?]
Eh, well, I don't mind, it's just a normal closet as far as Cay can tell, but you might wanna ask my roommate before poking through his side?
[A beat. A thought.]
Not that he's been here, yet, so it's, like, prob totes even emptier. If you wanna look around, Cay can keep a secret.
no subject
I will! This wardrobe holds nothing of interest, so let's move on to what belongs to your room companion.
[He says that, doesn't even bother to close the wardrobe, and just begins opening and closing the drawers on Idia's bed. A veritable tornado of activity, this man is! Or perhaps he wants to be done and leave before Idia gets here, it could be that too.
He does stop midway, though, and addresses Cater]
Who do I have the pleasure of speaking to? What's your name, my good fellow?
no subject
Ah- Be right there...!
[Let him, you know, straighten his things and close the drawers and wardrobe while you get started on Idia's things!!
But, soon enough, he's right back to peeking over Sholmes' shoulder as he rifles through the wardrobe.]
Eh? Oh, right, right! Cater Diamond~!
[Introductions... important... but also easy to forget when someone waltzes in and starts going through your things, to be fair!]
no subject
[Hah, hey, it's easy to forget when you're the one going through someone else's things, as he proves because only now he introduces himself!]
I'm the Herlock Sholmes, the detective whose name is known all over the world.
no subject
[But, wait, this guy is talking like he should know who he is, but.........
Hm.]
Ah, but, sorry, sorry, Cay doesn't follow detective news, so he hasn't heard of you...
no subject
[Sholmes flicks his hat upwards]
I will make sure to send you a few for your perusal as soon as I come across them!
[Because few people spread Herlock Sholmes' adventures like Herlock Sholmes himself, who does things like leaving copies of that magazine in other people's book collections and other similar places, hah]
no subject
[...Though, you know, probably not.]
Oh, but if you find some, I'll totes read them!
[Hey, gotta recognize the self-promotion! No judgement from this one!]
no subject
[Implying the only thing worthwhile in the magazine is the stories about him. Sholmes' ego is incredible, haha.
Having introduced himself, Sholmes resumes his search, going pretty thoroughly, even lifting the mattress to take a look underneath it. At least he makes things look like he never passed through. It's important for others to not know he was ever there!]
Now you tell me about yourself, young man. You have the soul of an entertainer. Go ahead, boast about what you do!
no subject
[An expression of... almost cynical understanding passes over Cater's face briefly, for maybe at most a second or two. So either Sholmes was so egotistical that nothing else mattered but himself... or he could only get his exploits published in a trashy, worthless magazine, and... still had a massive ego. So he was one of those.
Ah well. No reason to not continue to be nice - Sholmes hadn't been catty or overly superior yet, at any rate.]
Me? An entertainer? No, no, Cay's just a student! Sure, he has a few thousand magicam followers, but it's not like he's famous or anything...!
no subject
[.........
Now what is magicam supposed to be, what]
You can't hide that soul, regardless. Few are as gregarious as those who are destined to shine under a spotlight, and you're already making your way there!
[Talking as if good Cater here is trying really hard to make his way into the entertainment world, but hey, what other conclusion can one get when one speaks of having followers and the such?]
no subject
[.........Oh how to explain the Instagram equivalent to someone who doesn't even have the internet...]
A spotlight...? Well, it's not like I'd mind if I got scouted for something, you know?
