04 - week four

WEEK FOUR

Saturday comes to a close, and it’s time for some rest and recovery. Perhaps the TLC you deserve will come this week, or perhaps the nightmare will continue. It’s hard to say with things being so strange around you, from Wei Wuxian’s disappearance to the sudden addition of objects and places and creatures from your homes. Who knows what this week will bring? Nothing ordinary, that’s for sure.

You wake up on Sunday to an increase in those little glimpses you saw yesterday. What were snippets of songs, locations that might’ve seemed familiar, and creatures that were dormant, are now all alive and whole. When you go to the karaoke bar, the songs you once knew are there. Monsters and animals are alive and sentient. New business are abound. Vehicles are operable, and perhaps some of your old belongings are back, too.

However, some of these things aren’t even things that should exist outside of your dreams. They may be far too strange and unusual to be real, or just things you don't remember ever seeing. The only thing you remember about these things in particular is that they were, quite literally, in your dreams this week.

That being said, every few hours, all of these things from your homes and dreams fade out and get replaced by new sounds, places, beasts….only to maybe come back again at another time.

Well. At least there's one constant here: You’ve got a handful of new locations to look at, with the fog having spread once more, and they aren't going anywhere. There aren’t as many new places that are native to Estelline this time around, but that may be for the best, considering everything going on.

Also, we have a lot of participants for the news activity from last week. Neat! Everyone who participated in some capacity will have a small polaroid camera delivered to their doorstep. There's limited film, though - 10 photos per camera. It doesn't seem like there's any extra film at this time, either.

Finally, there will not be any weekly tasks this week. You guys are going to be busy with memshare and dreamscape stuff; instead, enjoy the Estelline University Newspaper!

That's good to know, little kitty.

[Not that she intends to go off and do that. Yet. Who knows how she'll be feeling later?

The coastline is still pretty, at least, the construction not yet taking over the beach and the water still clear. There's a small outdoor market set up that's still busy, even as late as it is. The moon is very bright, very big, and seems very, very close. All in all it's quite pleasant, and a far cry from the landscape Owen lead Hien around before.]

You know what I like?

[ Hien tilts his head up. ]

Beaches at night. It's cold, windy, and nobody else is around. In some beaches, you can see stuff that makes the ocean look like it's glowing at night. All that without magic.

[Owen hums.]

I think there are some species of fish around here that glow.

[She stops at the water's edge, finally easing up her hold on Hien so he can climb to a different perch, if he wants.]

This is about the only time a Western beach will be quiet, too.

[There's a definite chill, but Owen is unbothered by it, if she even notices it at all.]

[ He moves around so that he can drape over Owen's shoulder. ]

Because everyone's at the tavern? Or they don't like coming out at night?

Only things open right now are places for wizards.

[So - yes, sort of, to both of those questions.]

You're not from here, are you? You're from another world, like the Sage.

I'm from the void. No world is my home.

[ Here's a small cat yawn. ]

[She's going to slide off her shoes, kicking them up the beach so they're out of range of the waves.]

Are you like the Great Calamity, then? Here to destroy us all?

[ There go her shoes... ]

Yeah, I guess. Though... not right now. Maybe some time in the distant future.

[She'll pick them up later! For now it's time to actually step into the water.]

How distant? Decades? Centuries? Or will it be thousands of years from now?

Dunno. It's supposed to be when two certain existences die, but they have to choose to die. It'll probably be after you die of old age.

What if they never choose to die? How do you know they'll actually time for it all to be over?

[ Hien shrugs as much as a kitten can. ]

Whatever they choose to do with their lives doesn't concern me. They should live however they want to.

You’re a very strange Calamity, little kitty.

[Not that that’s necessarily a complaint.]

But I suppose the moon doesn’t care what anyone is doing, either. Why should you?

... Yeah.

[ He's a little surprised that Owen isn't trying to chase him out of the world after learning that he's something like a Calamity. He was never welcome in worlds that had people aware of the fact. They were scared. They didn't want their world eaten. ]

You're pretty laidback about this.

Yeah? I mean, having to fight the Calamity every year has gotten pretty annoying after... two hundred years, give or take? But it is what it is.

[It's become something of a routine nuisance, same as dying.]

And I didn't really care about it much before I got chosen, so... I don't see why I should care more, now.

[She didn't even know the mark on her tongue was related to the Calamity at all, when it had appeared. The threat of their world ending is simply one of the things that makes her home what it is, and she accepted that a long time ago. Maybe, some day, they'll fail at keeping it at bay, but... so be it.]

Are you bound to your duty? If not, you can just fuck off and do whatever you want and watch the world burn.

I've tried, but I just get hounded and dragged along anyways. It's impossible to escape those twins, especially when they get Mithra to do their dirty work.

[ Mithra sounds familiar at least. ]

I wish they'd just do that.

[It's very annoying.]

Maybe the lily will fade soon and I can retire. That's more likely to happen before I turn to stone, anyways.

The Sage's wizards fight the Calamity, and each wizard chosen for that is marked by a lily somewhere on their body.

And there's no way to remove them. I tried to rip out my tongue to get rid of it when it first showed up, but it was still there when I came back.

[ Hien squints and looks down at Owen. ]

Your tongue mark sure as hell doesn't look like a lily.

So you've never been to this world even though you've talked to me?

[Which does sound incredibly fake, but he knows just enough that it... does seem plausible.]
