[ Julius pauses to think, drinking from his coffee before he replies. ]

A lot of it is managing agents that work on maintaining what we refer to as "fractured dimensions." They're essentially alternate versions of our world, but they can differ depending on certain factors.

[ it. it's a lot, gentaro. it's so much. ]

[ ... Well, that's interesting.

Gentaro mulls it over, and while his expression stays much the same, he's lost in the "what if"s. Of course, before the silence can stretch on for too long, he nods. His musing can happen later... or maybe not at all, considering he's already troubled Bennett enough with his feelings. ]

Quite the fascinating profession. How does one become one of these agents? Surely not just anyone can, I presume, travel to these fractured dimensions.

There's a small nod. ]

Only certain people who are born with the ability to enter fractured dimensions. It's not something that happens very often, so the department is pretty small compared to the rest of Spirius. And certain dimensions are impossible to enter without a strong enough ability, so the pool gets even smaller, depending on the situation.

[ is this gross simplification??? yes. but otherwise they'd be sitting here all night and julius isn't sure he's quite ready for that yet. ]

I see.

[ He studies Julius for a moment, then tilts his head just slightly. ]

I am going to hazard a guess that these fractured dimensions are less than ideal. I am not certain what "maintaining" demands, but it does seem that these fractured dimensions could pose a very real threat if one is unprepared.

Something like that. The specifics are a little bit of a hassle to go through, but the short of it is that they are a threat to humanity in my world.

[ And none of it is good. He rubs his left forearm absentmindedly. ]

The department itself is a secret to everyone below a certain point in the company, so it goes mostly unnoticed. Not that it gets done for recognition.

[ Hmm.

He doesn't miss that. He wonders if this has anything to do with his favoring his arm. It's not his business, ultimately. ]

How altruistic. [ Or maybe those that have the ability to manage these dimensions do it out of obligation, if it's so rare. ] Surely no one would take on such a burden with less than good intentions, hm?

You'd be surprised.

[ No, he's not going to elaborate. But it's getting close to the end of as much as he's willing to say right now, so hopefully Gentaro will just deal with the less-than-graceful transition. ]

What sort of writing do you normally do?

[ Gentaro gets it, don't worry. He's more than willing to roll along. ]

Ah, that is a broad question, Kresnik-san, as I write on many things. Often, what I write are requested specifically. Commissions are quite easy for me to come by. I have written mysteries, though they are not my favorite; thrillers; coming of age stories... light novels as well, as I find they are my most commissioned works.

Hm, what else... ah. I've also written conspiracy novels based off true events. It's quite exciting, really, exposing the crimes of others.
